Being an events director often means long hours at various places in town. I’m always looking for pieces that keep me stylish in the workplace and are equally stunning at happy hour or evening events. I found a few things to accomplish my goal in Manhattanites’ massive sale section – and each of these is 70% off!

I love silk tops like this Ruffle Blouse by Nu Collective – looks smashing with a high-waisted pencil skirt and my favorite skinny jeans!

voomtubedr I can’t go wrong with pairing fabulous dresses like the Voom Darling Tube Dress with tights & a blazer.

yukikimcoatThe Yuki Kim Kimono Coat. Because I gotta keep warm in that nutty Seattle weather, and because it’s less than $100 on sale!

Admiring Erin Fetherston

I’d been admiring Erin Fetherston’s most recent short film, Birds of a Fether and have been enchanted with her whimsical, girlish style. I love the idea of finding pieces with the same similar aesthetic, but a more affordable cost.

A whimsical dress by Betsey Johnson (for $108/down from $360!). It’s perfect for following that bird. Pair with pretty black patent pumps (or adorn them with sequins and glitter with an extra special kick!).

This plum Lauren Conrad Dress is versatile and great for customizing. It’d be perfect paired with a black velvet bow belt or pinned to the bodice.

Summer Dressing

Summer may technically be on its way out, but here in New York, the weather just started getting (too) warm!  For us, we get lucky with nice summery weather until late September with many local vacation spots such as the Hamptons and Nantucket still active well into the first month of fall.

When it comes to summer, the best casual chic item to wear is the dress.  Judging from New York street style, maxi dresses are still popular as ever!  I’ve actually picked up a few different styles of maxis from the every popular empire waist to dressier cinched-at-the waist styles.  And when the weather turns, these dresses will make great resort wear even at the most glamorous beaches.  The best part is- with these dresses- no heels needed! Maxi dresses look best with a casual sandal or flip flop.

Gypsy 05 Organic Maxi Dress in Plum is probably one of my favorites in terms of simple elegance and color.  Priced at $100, it’s also very accessible for all budgets and made of organic cotton to boot! I’m definitely picking one up.

maxi2

Sweetees Bramble Maxi Dress in Peach has a lot of Southern charm. I love the silk floral print and the beautiful ruffles on the bottom makes me want to take it out for a spin.

maxi3

I love that the Va Va by Joy Han Tulle Maxi Dress in Pale Blue has sleeve, making it a very pretty, vintagey- romantic piece perfect for wearing to a weekend lawn party or polo match.

And of course, I can’t resist something on sale! I particularly love this Scoop Beach Signature Beach Dress in Silver Lurex Ikat Print for its gorgeous print and timeless style.

Let’s Put an End to Pajama Neglect

Monday, August 10th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

I am going to raise a very serious question … where did all of the pajamas go? All right, I lied, that wasn’t a serious question but it’s still a decent question. We wore pajamas as children but once we hit our rebellious teenage years it all changed. Suddenly it was ratty tee shirts and now, in adulthood, it’s either lingerie or just plain nudity.

If you really think through three stages of sleepwear, pajamas are the best of the bunch. Pajamas are comfortable (much more comfortable than that sexy lacey lingerie contraption) and cute (unlike your ratty Nirvana tee shirt from middle school.) I for one am going to fight to bring pajamas back and thankfully, I have Manhattanite on my side – the pajama selection is unreal. They’ve got the best of the best; Scanty and PJ Salvage.

So who’s with me? While you all ponder joining the good fight, I will share with you my favorites:

Shopping The Sale For Fall 2009

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

With a cool summer here in Indiana, it looks like Fall could be just around the corner.  If you’re like me and “trends” don’t matter, then now is a great time to pick up some excellent pieces to take you through Fall and in to Winter on Manhattanite.

This AMAZING Mackage Coat is marked down from $550 to $275. A classic trench like this never goes out of style, and the color is cool, feminine, and chic.  I love that the buttons are a bit more asymmetrical and it has the ribbing down the side.

Kenneth Cole Flats for only $39.50. I’m honestly amazed these haven’t been completely scooped up! I love a good flat all year round, and the stormy grey color is perfect to move through all four seasons. Naturally, the 8.5s and 9s are gone, so I have no chance for a pair myself…

This Rochelle Rodriguez dress is a cool $63– and it would look great paired with everything- over jeans, over chunky tights, with cowboy boots, ankle boots, or gladiators. Pair it with denim coats, blazers, and more. A playful take on a great basic.

This is really only a small sampling on the many great deals Manhattanite has going on right now– I could go on and on about the many pieces I’d stock up on for the change in weather!

Why So Serious?

You know one of those days when you cannot be bothered to put together a killer outfit and just want to throw on something simple? I’m sure we all get that sometimes, especially me. Well, even fashionistas are entitled to a day off their stylish routine once in awhile, we’re only human, um, I mean fabulous, after all!

When it comes to days like that, I personally like to thrown on a cool graphic tank to express my personality or sense of humour. If its soft, comfortable, not too tight and fits right, that tank is a winner! Its not always as easy as it looks to find a good tank but I believe these tanks have got the perfect formula right!

Be sure to keep a good stash of such tanks in your wardrobe and you’ll never have to worry about what to wear on a lazy day no more. They can also be a good twist to your more serious outfits and a great cover-up for the beach!

Effortless and Stylish BBQ Attire

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

For me there are two types of BBQs; the lets dress up all cute and look at the food on the grill and the lets get down and dirty with a hotdog and some potato salad. I prefer the down and dirty, which means down and dirty apparel.

If you are anything like me – the “down and dirty” look is a carefully crafted masterpiece. You’ve gotta look carefree and fabulous at the same time. I have managed to concoct the perfect formula for such a look.

Key Ingredients:

- 1 loose fitting and fashion forward top. This is perfect for actually eating at a BBQ!

- 1 pair of cut off denim shorts. Denim shorts are so hot right now, so going with this “lazy days of summer” look will actually score you tons of fashion points.

- 1 pair of Havaianas flip flops. I strongly advise against going with some “other” brand of flip flops because Havaianas are the best.

Optional Ingredients:

- A pair of Wayfarer sunglasses.

- Oversized tote (you need something to bring your BBQ contribution.)

- Stylish hair band to keep your hair out of your face in the hot-hot heat.

Carefully mix all ingredients with fashionable care and head off to your BBQ! Have fun and eat a hotdog for me.

Mella Flip Flops

After a long day roughing it in heels, there’s nothing I like more than coming home to super comfy, super soft slippers.  During the winter, you can’t get me out of my White & Warren cashmere slippers, but during the summer you’ll find me in my Mella Terry Flip Flops.  I became obsessed with these since the first time I’ve ever tried them on, years ago.  Unlike rubber flip flops, the straps will never cut into your feet and the terry cloth provides extra soft cushioning for feet.  Although I choose just to wear these at home, the rubber sole makes this shoe even appropriate to wear outside- though I would steer clear of the beach.  The flip flops also come in a platform version, with 2 and 1/4in wedge to give you a little boost.  Super cute with jeans or a mini skirt.

Going a bit Gaga….

It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me that I have a huge amorous crush on Lady Gaga.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a woman who does fashion by her own rules, and I’d love to see more, More, MORE Gaga-esque boldness and playfulness hitting the streets around us.  Including on you.  And me.

jetset

Siwy Hannah Slim Crop Jean in Wet Jet: I love that these mimic Gaga’s infamous latex body suits, but may be a tad more comfortable for everyday wear.

mesh

Siwy Sophie Slim Crop Pant in Jet and Onyx Mesh or also in Wanderlust/Onyx: the peak-a-boo styling on these would be great coupled with an oversized blazer and big glasses.

(Anyone else suspect Michelle Siwy is a Lady Gaga fan?)

Most importantly, is that with finding someone like Lady Gaga an inspiration, is to remember that the most sincere form of flattery is not replicating, but doing your own bright & bold thing (though that wouldn’t stop me from wearing these in her honor)!

Stylish Birthday Wishes

Monday, July 13th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

I have no idea when the birthday card was born, but until now I considered them to be pretty lame. I mean think about back when you were a kid and your mom had to remind you to “look at the card” before you ripped open your present. Once you hit the teenage years, its all about the “card shake” aka looking for money inside the card. When you finally hit adulthood, the card simply represents the fact that someone actually remembered your birthday — but overall the whole card thing is still pretty useless.

Well let me tell you something … there is nothing useless about these fabulous birthday cards.

These gorgeous birthday cards are worthy of framing!  The fashionable illustrations are just divine. So send your fashionable friend or family member something different than what’s on the shelves at Hallmark. Plus, pretty confident that with a card this great … a present is totally optional.
