A Case of The Navy Blues

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Authored by: Crosby

For the longest time navy reminded me of the perfume advertised in my YM Magazine. It meant preppy, it was the color of my elementary school uniforms, especially those scratchy cardigan sweaters. I believed that you either chose brown, gray, blue or black as your anchor color, and never should the twine intersect (except for gray and black, of course - what would life be without black and gray). I never was a blue girl, never chose blue as a wall color, have never driven a blue car (pickle green yes, but never blue) and until recently, have really only considered the color when pulling out the frosty blue eyeshadow to wear to an eighties party.

Recently however, blue has seemed almost a bit subversive - to choose navy over black, or any shade of blue over my beloved red and pink -  it’s sacrilege! Given the thrill of breaking my own rules, I’ve picked out a few Manhattanite pieces that I’m sure will help me ease into the blues this winter.

Are you a Disney princess at heart?

Whether young or old, Disney’s whimsical world has left an imprint on many a girl’s dreams. Of course, most of us don’t have a Never Never Land - and as we grow older, our love for Disney become fond memories of our past. Now, with Disney Couture jewelry, you can incorporate a little of that nostalgia and magic into your everyday wardrobe!

Disney Couture jewelry features gold and silver-plated pieces mixing beloved icons like Tinkerbell, Cinderella’s castle and Snow White’s mirror with contemporary fashion. Guest designer Kidada Jones contributes fun and playful pieces combined with artful street style.

These pieces remind me of all my girlfriends who scramble to get the latest Disney Classic movie for the kids they don’t even have yet, just so they can share the enchantment they experienced when we were children. Here’s to a perfect holiday gift for the Disney princess(es) in your life!

The Written Word

Monday, October 26th, 2009
Authored by: Ashe Mischief

For as much as I value the written word in all of its incarnations, I’m terrible about writing with my hands.  I’ve an avid love of stationery’s, notecards, means and tools for sending love letters to those in my lives, even though I rarely do it…

hearts1

I absolutely adore this heart notecard set. It’s 80s and precocious– perfect for writing notes of inspiration to my teenaged nieces.

I love love the Modern Geometry stationery set.  The pieces are so bold, so striking, that I would almost want to frame these in thick white frames to create a great, cheap art collection.

These stationery sets are beautiful, vibrant pieces of art, just like penmanship is. They’d be a dream to add to my desk drawers to inspire me to do more hand written letters (and learn to write more neatly in the process!).

Mad About Mackage

I am nuts about Mackage. As it gets more & more frigid by the day, I’m naturally drawn to things that will keep me cozy and warm without sacrificing style.

Thanks to Manhattanites, my peacoat game has been elevated with this beautiful outerwear brand. I love the sleek, military style that shapes each coat. Details both raw and feminine, from leather belts, & high collars to jeweled buttons & princess puff sleeves, make these pieces extra special. Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan, the fabulous friends behind Mackage, keep their focus on body-conscious silhouettes and precise tailoring which women of all body types and ages can appreciate.

Here is Eva Mendes in Mackage’s “Elle” coat from a previous collection. She’s paired her coat with one of the hottest fall trends - over-the -knee boots - a statement bag & chic sunglasses for effortless and elegant style.mackeva

My personal favorite in Mackage’s latest collection is the Zahara coat in Pewter. Bell sleeves, leather details and a hood make the perfect combination for me!

How I Wore It: Siwy Camilla Denim Shorts

siwycamilla

I recently had the joy of acquiring the Siwy “Camilla” Shorts in charm wash. It has so far been extremely over-worn in all sorts of situations simply because they are the best classic pair of denim shorts every girl should own and they can be ideal even when it gets a bit chilly by simply adding tights underneath.

If you are interested in these shorts, let me just tell you that they do run a little larger so you may want to consider ordering them in a size smaller. Despite getting them a size smaller, I still have quite a bit of room in there which is great because it means thick tights can be worn underneath with ease. You will be pleased with the soft material of the denim and how well it lifts your bottom up.

I like mine worn with a slightly baggy cropped t-shirt, accessories that fits my personality and ankle boots. However, why not try it with an oversized hoodie for fall? I think the above Wildfox Couture items are great complimentary pieces with these shorts as well.

Admiring Erin Fetherston

I’d been admiring Erin Fetherston’s most recent short film, Birds of a Fether and have been enchanted with her whimsical, girlish style. I love the idea of finding pieces with the same similar aesthetic, but a more affordable cost.

A whimsical dress by Betsey Johnson (for $108/down from $360!). It’s perfect for following that bird. Pair with pretty black patent pumps (or adorn them with sequins and glitter with an extra special kick!).

This plum Lauren Conrad Dress is versatile and great for customizing. It’d be perfect paired with a black velvet bow belt or pinned to the bodice.

Summer Dressing

Summer may technically be on its way out, but here in New York, the weather just started getting (too) warm!  For us, we get lucky with nice summery weather until late September with many local vacation spots such as the Hamptons and Nantucket still active well into the first month of fall.

When it comes to summer, the best casual chic item to wear is the dress.  Judging from New York street style, maxi dresses are still popular as ever!  I’ve actually picked up a few different styles of maxis from the every popular empire waist to dressier cinched-at-the waist styles.  And when the weather turns, these dresses will make great resort wear even at the most glamorous beaches.  The best part is- with these dresses- no heels needed! Maxi dresses look best with a casual sandal or flip flop.

Gypsy 05 Organic Maxi Dress in Plum is probably one of my favorites in terms of simple elegance and color.  Priced at $100, it’s also very accessible for all budgets and made of organic cotton to boot! I’m definitely picking one up.

maxi2

Sweetees Bramble Maxi Dress in Peach has a lot of Southern charm. I love the silk floral print and the beautiful ruffles on the bottom makes me want to take it out for a spin.

maxi3

I love that the Va Va by Joy Han Tulle Maxi Dress in Pale Blue has sleeve, making it a very pretty, vintagey- romantic piece perfect for wearing to a weekend lawn party or polo match.

And of course, I can’t resist something on sale! I particularly love this Scoop Beach Signature Beach Dress in Silver Lurex Ikat Print for its gorgeous print and timeless style.

Let’s Put an End to Pajama Neglect

Monday, August 10th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

I am going to raise a very serious question … where did all of the pajamas go? All right, I lied, that wasn’t a serious question but it’s still a decent question. We wore pajamas as children but once we hit our rebellious teenage years it all changed. Suddenly it was ratty tee shirts and now, in adulthood, it’s either lingerie or just plain nudity.

If you really think through three stages of sleepwear, pajamas are the best of the bunch. Pajamas are comfortable (much more comfortable than that sexy lacey lingerie contraption) and cute (unlike your ratty Nirvana tee shirt from middle school.) I for one am going to fight to bring pajamas back and thankfully, I have Manhattanite on my side – the pajama selection is unreal. They’ve got the best of the best; Scanty and PJ Salvage.

So who’s with me? While you all ponder joining the good fight, I will share with you my favorites:

Shopping The Sale For Fall 2009

Thursday, August 6th, 2009
Authored by: Ashe Mischief

With a cool summer here in Indiana, it looks like Fall could be just around the corner.  If you’re like me and “trends” don’t matter, then now is a great time to pick up some excellent pieces to take you through Fall and in to Winter on Manhattanite.

This AMAZING Mackage Coat is marked down from $550 to $275. A classic trench like this never goes out of style, and the color is cool, feminine, and chic.  I love that the buttons are a bit more asymmetrical and it has the ribbing down the side.

Kenneth Cole Flats for only $39.50. I’m honestly amazed these haven’t been completely scooped up! I love a good flat all year round, and the stormy grey color is perfect to move through all four seasons. Naturally, the 8.5s and 9s are gone, so I have no chance for a pair myself…

This Rochelle Rodriguez dress is a cool $63– and it would look great paired with everything- over jeans, over chunky tights, with cowboy boots, ankle boots, or gladiators. Pair it with denim coats, blazers, and more. A playful take on a great basic.

This is really only a small sampling on the many great deals Manhattanite has going on right now– I could go on and on about the many pieces I’d stock up on for the change in weather!
