Shopping in Heels After Work — The Biggest No-No!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Authored by: Good Girl Gone Shopping

I.love.to.shop.

I do so whether I’m feeling cheery or when I’m feeling blue. I do so whether I am bloated and puffy or when I have lost five pounds. And unfortunately, I do so while wearing heels after an eight-hour work shift. Of course, most of us know how to spend long days wearing stilettos, peep toes, or wedges to work. But hitting a retail store or boutique when the dogs are barking – after work — is a no-no. This will definitely ruin your lovely time browsing, trying on, and purchasing, especially  if you are as thorough and eager as “Rebecca Bloomwood!”

The last time I wore my pink pointy heels to the mall on a Friday after work, I wanted to cry. Because I enjoy walking the mall also for exercise, I found myself instead taking little shuffle steps and ending my shopping trip about an hour early. So trivia: How could I have prevented this from occurring? Well, number one would be to stop repeating my mistake and assuming that I can tough it out. Number two: I should have remembered to bring a cute pair of flats with me to change in.

If you relate to this, and you don’t have at least one pair of cute sandals or ballet flats that go great with any outfit, take a look at these adorable (and on-sale affordable) metallic flats from Manhattanite. Talk about versatility!

An Introduction to Grechen

Monday, July 6th, 2009
Authored by: grechen

Hi! I’m Grechen, from Grechen’s Closet, one of the very first online shopping blogs, and spinoffs - grechenscodes.com: coupon codes for contemporary women’s shopping online, green grechen: eco-friendly fashion and shopping online, and free!grechen: contests & giveaways for women who love fashion and shopping.

One of my main passions at the moment is discovering and sharing eco-friendly designers & boutiques at green grechen, and I am pleased to be involved with Manhattanite and spotlight some of their eco-friendly designers!

Whether or not you’re interested in greening up your wardrobe, summer is a great time to try bamboo clothing if you haven’t already.  Bamboo, while somewhat controversial as an eco-friendly fabric, makes fabulous warm-weather wear because it’s breathable, and wicks away moisture better than cotton. This isn’t some wild claim put forward by bamboo growers, it’s totally true! I personally have a wonderful bamboo tank that I wear all summer long and definitely feel like it keeps me cooler than cotton. Bamboo also drapes perfectly because it’s a little heavier than cotton - which makes it an ideal fabric for dresses.

There are some great designers out there who work in bamboo, Toggery is one of my favorites, as is Doie and Ecoganik. Bamboosa makes great basics and children’s items using organically grown bamboo, and Lizzie Parker makes really great cardigans, perfect for throwing on over sundresses!

Two of my favorite pieces this season are by Ecoganik and Doie:

Ecoganik: $128

Ecoganik: $128

Doie: $68

Doie: $68

I’d wear these all summer long with organic cotton leggings, jeans, tucked into cute a-line skirts…pretty much everything! Seriously, I couldn’t live with out my bamboo tops in the summer, and neither should you - definitely give it a try, you won’t be sorry.

Intro to Vyqué of Fasshonaburu

Authored by: Fasshonaburu

Greetings! My name is Vyqué and I’ve been fashion blogging over at Fasshonaburu for almost five years now! You’d think this would be warning enough, but I guess you all can’t get enough of my run on sentences because here I am! My great love is trying to predict fashion trends, and sometimes I’m even right (I wrote about drop crotch harem pants in 2008!)! If you can forgive my incorrigible grammar, I’m sure we’ll get along great, and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you.

With that, here’s a little something that’s  been on my radar for summer fashion:

Grecian Style

Sorry Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, but I am SO over boho looks for summer! I still want to convey a soft, breezy look - black and neon 80s style just feel too harsh to me right now! Luckily, there is the classic, yet totally un-boring Grecian style! Think floaty fabrics of jersey & chiffon, pleating & studs, metallics, and one shoulder dresses & tops! It’s a super romantic look, but can be edged up with hardware if you please. And don’t fear color - not all that is Grecian has to be white and gold.

Summer Cardigan Love

By the time summer rolls around, you think it’s time to move the sweaters to the attic. But the truth is, there are a few cozies you’ll need for those cool summer nights, walks among the shady trees, and even the overzealous movie theatre AC. Burr. Even if you’re on your way to a holiday in Hawaii, you’ll need a light cardigan to get you through a restaurant dinner (speaking fom experience… air conditioning is crazy there!).

I have this long grey cardigan that’s a staple in my wardrobe. I must wear it several times a week, all year around. That can’t be healthy, but it’s so good to have a piece of clothing loved so well. Here at Manhattanite, we have a selection of great cardigans, especially grey ones as they tend to be the most versaitle, and basically go with everything from a sexy summer dress to lounging around the house. Here’s my favorites for this summer:

Introducing Good Girl Gone Shopping

Elana PruittSo here’s the deal, I know that boots are typically not really a summertime shoe. But when it comes to my BCBGirls’ booties, I just can’t turn my back on them… not just yet. That said, my solution to making them work for me in the summer is to pair them up with brightly colored, summer dresses (of course, I will continue to wear them with skinny jeans…).

As for the selection of flirty, affordable dresses that Manhattanite has available? Well, well, I am a bit head over heels for them. Discounts and clearance on fabulous designer wear makes me swoon – honestly. Those who don’t know me just yet, allow me to say that as the Good Girl Gone Shopping, you will soon learn how obsessive I am about shopping sales and budgeting thy finances. In addition to being a fashion blogger, I am also a personal shopper (GGGS was formerly ‘Diary of a Personal Shopper’) who lives to find the perfect pieces to complement a gal’s personality and lifestyle. My name is Elana Pruitt – nice to meet ya!

So, here are my top five picks from the Manhattanite closet. I have personally selected dresses that each retail for about 150 bucks or less. Whether you pair them up with your own booties, peep-toe heels, flat gladiator sandals, or even stilettos, you can make each one a new story to tell. Check them out:

Gift This: Movies To See Notepad

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

Lately when the topic of movies comes up, the conversation always takes the same turn; “You haven’t seen that?” or “Where have you been!” or “You’re joking, right?”

Basically if it’s a classic, really well known, or worthy of an award — I haven’t seen it. Need an example? Okay, this one seems to sum up my point pretty well … Star Wars. Yep that’s right, I haven’t seen Star Wars. You see, Ben Stiller movies are more my speed.

Movies To See Notepad

Movies To See Notepad

I have disgusted my co-workers with my movie antics for the last time. This disgust has resulted in them rattling off a list of movies that I need to see. I have this list written down on some random Hello Kitty post-it note that is currently buried somewhere in my Gucci handbag. The list will probably never surface again.

That smashed up sheet of paper seems pretty foolish considering this awesome notepad exists. Not only would this notepad be handy for a movie flunky like myself but it would also make a nice addition to a movie gift pack. Think about it — Popcorn, a few DVDs, and this sweet notebook tucked inside a chic little tote. Sounds like something that I would like to receive as a gift (hint, hint.)

An Introduction to Jennine

Authored by: Jennine

Hi there, I’m Jennine and I’m a reformed shopaholic. Sort of. Prior to my blog The Coveted two years ago, I had a massive shopping addiction, like we’re talking every lunch break I’d be at the shops…

Now a days I’ve managed to curb my shopping, instead I daydream about fashion and think of ways to work with the most essential parts of a wardrobe, getting the most out of each piece. Often times I’ll mix in vintage and DIY (do it yourself)  in with contemporary pieces to really create that unique look.

Essential for this summer…

Statement Tanks

Who says tank tops need to be simple? The summer of 2009 is all about relaxed rocker chic. You’ll see deconstructed tee shirts, jeans, cotton jersey everywhere. Personally, I’m loving statement tanks. Here on Manhattanite, designer Astars, a division of motorsport company, Alpinestars. They create high quality tee shirts and tanks with a motorcycle vibe. Perfect for wearing with messy, wind tossed hair, jeans and super strappy sandals.

Introducing Carolyn from The Daily Obsession

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
Authored by: The Daily Obsession

Hi everyone, welcome to June! Carolyn here from The Daily Obsession and you’ll know if you read my site that I really love fashion. For me, May was very  Confessions of a Shopaholic style where I contemplated selling my old Louboutins in order to fund two new pairs and eBaying my Prada purse since I accidentally purchased a Tod’s overnight bag from a sale I wasn’t even supposed to go to.

But June..June is a new month with a fresh budget, but since I overdid it a little last month, I went deal hunting on Manhattanite to find pieces for my summer wardrobe.  I thought I’d be stuck to sorting through winter coats in the sale section, but I actually scored some really great, warm weather finds at prices that didn’t leave me feeling like I needed to sell half my closet to pay for it.  Let me know what you think about my picks below!

Gypsy 05 Organic Maxi Dress in Canteloupe

Maxi dresses are still hot this summer and I love this easy, flattering shape and sunny color.  Plus it’s only $70 and made from 100% organic cotton.

Sweetees Cinnamon Tube Dress

This dress is so cute for going out on a summer evening, weekend brunch or even the office when paired with a cotton blazer. I love the longer length which makes it a little bit dressier.  It’s incredibly versatile and well priced at only $115.50.

Harkham Jersey Dress

For a sexy night out, I love this lightweight LBD by Harkham which comes with an authentic removable leather belt. Priced at only $131, that’s cheaper than just buying a belt at a lot of other places!

Lauren Conrad Julie Swiss Dot Jumper

I’m actually dying for a cute little jumper but it’s hard to find one that won’t have those not in the fashion-know go, “what are you wearing?” But this black number from Lauren Conrad is so cute no one would question your outfit! Plus, it’s 50% off, just in time for the summer!

Sweetees Adisa Dress

This Sweetees dress is appropraite for a beach wedding to a city dinner and anything in between. Wear it with dangly earrings or a long necklace for something really feminine and sophisticated or belt it with one of the 2 removable belts from above picks for a whole new look.  You really can’t go wrong because it’s from my favorite section- the 70% off rack and clocks in at only $43.

Happy shopping!
