Bohemian Flair

bohemianflair

The latest additions to the Manhattanite shop are flowered with hints of  bohemian influences. From Wildfox’s screen printed shirts featuring feather graphics to J.J. Winters easy-to-wear suede fringed bags, there is no excuse not to adopt a liberating attitude to dressing right now.

Not only is the J.J. WInters suede fringe bag a strong piece towards bohemian style, it can easily be adapted for a country and western look. There is a perfect day-time everyday version in taupe and also a mini version available in both taupe and navy, which I find suitable for both day and night. The best part is, both styles are perfectly priced so you won’t feel the pinch while having just saved yourself from a exhausting hunt for the perfect simple suede fringed bag.

Whilst the light blue hues of Siwy denim’s latest offerings in the hannah style are easily the first pieces to go to, especially with dreamy wash names like “fall in love” and “first love” to set the mood; I had felt that the boot-cut style “Harley” would add a more natural aura around the look. The best thing is, most of the Harley washes are now on sale and I have found myself inclining towards the light washes “Freedom” and “Lilt”.

Picture Alessandro Ambroiso in the Wildfox Light Feather Boy Tank in Heathe Gray, J.J. Winters Suede Fringed Bag in Taupe and Siwy Harley Jeans in Lilt with a pair of plain Havaianas for the perfect example of this carefree look that I have in mind right now. Now pick your bohemian-flavoured piece and live free today!

A Case of The Navy Blues

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Authored by: Crosby

For the longest time navy reminded me of the perfume advertised in my YM Magazine. It meant preppy, it was the color of my elementary school uniforms, especially those scratchy cardigan sweaters. I believed that you either chose brown, gray, blue or black as your anchor color, and never should the twine intersect (except for gray and black, of course - what would life be without black and gray). I never was a blue girl, never chose blue as a wall color, have never driven a blue car (pickle green yes, but never blue) and until recently, have really only considered the color when pulling out the frosty blue eyeshadow to wear to an eighties party.

Recently however, blue has seemed almost a bit subversive - to choose navy over black, or any shade of blue over my beloved red and pink -  it’s sacrilege! Given the thrill of breaking my own rules, I’ve picked out a few Manhattanite pieces that I’m sure will help me ease into the blues this winter.

Still searching for that perfect Halloween costume? You don’t have to look much further than Manhattanites to channel a little Sandra Dee!

Over the years, countless girls have found inspiration in one or more of the many aspects of Olivia Newton-John’s iconic Grease character. Whether it was the fresh, white dress, the All-American cheerleader or the life of the party prom dress, Sandy spoke to a piece of you. Hands down, her leather & heels getup for the carnival took the cake for me. The sweetest Pink Lady turned bad girl to get her man. How could Danny Zuko resist that?

Update your Sandra Dee ensemble with today’s trends, from latex high-waisted leggings, ruching & zip details. Not only will you rock this year’s Halloween party, but you can incorporate these pieces into your wardrobe afterwards!

Working it Like a Princess: Bippity Boppity Boo Aprons

Authored by: Crosby

I have a slight problem with never putting anything away and a total aversion to this thing we call doing the dishes. When I was a young girl and it was time to clean my room, I used to play a sort of game where I would imagine I was Cinderella, forced to do these chores until my fairy godmother came and turned pumpkins into chariots or something.

Playing the role of the poor princess turned cleaning into a performance, and took my mind off the drudgery of putting clothes back into my closet, cleaning the tub, doing laundry etc. Now of course, there are more rooms to keep clean, and less time to clean them…but how fun (or at least more fun) would it be to put on Nancy Sinatra and prance around the house in these cupcake gloves and matching cupcake apron? Or put on some Patsy Cline and don a polka dot sweetheart apron? If I can’t convince the birds and the mice to do my chores for me, this may be the next best thing…

A whole lotta leather for fall

Leather

Confession: I have an old, designer knock-off leather hoodie from Old Navy scored for about $50 on Ebay, probably 4 years ago. The leather isn’t supple, buttery or any of the adjectives that usually get my mouth watering, but it does its duty, the perfect outwear for that summer dress as well as those black skinnies and shimmery top. Even better, it has started to degrade so that the brown flecks show at the elbow, turning it into something uniquely mine.  I have grown to love this jacket, it’s not a piece I worry about spilling a little wine on, or shoving into the bottom of a bag with god knows what lurking in its depths.  Plus, I’ve worn it on some pretty Important Life Events, so it has sentimental value.

However, this homage to “the little knock-off that could” does nothing to satiate my lust for a real lux leather bomber jacket of my own. Upgrading from “does the job” to a really well-made, so soft you want to wear it to bed leather jacket is a dream of mine. Currently,  I have my eye on this gunmetal leather jacket as well as the more traditional black bomber pictured above.

Like the LBD or the trench, the white t-shirt or whatever other fashion staples make it on the quintessential List, I wholeheartedly add leather jacket. It’s a year-round must-have, yet a decidedly appropriate investment for fall. Trust Ms. Amos (and me) on this one, ladies.

Admiring Erin Fetherston

I’d been admiring Erin Fetherston’s most recent short film, Birds of a Fether and have been enchanted with her whimsical, girlish style. I love the idea of finding pieces with the same similar aesthetic, but a more affordable cost.

A whimsical dress by Betsey Johnson (for $108/down from $360!). It’s perfect for following that bird. Pair with pretty black patent pumps (or adorn them with sequins and glitter with an extra special kick!).

This plum Lauren Conrad Dress is versatile and great for customizing. It’d be perfect paired with a black velvet bow belt or pinned to the bodice.

Safe Sale Picks

untitled-1

We tend to impulse buy when it comes to sales, don’t we? Remember nabbing something that you didn’t really like that much but bought it anyway because it was available at a generous discount? I know I have which is why I am pleasantly surprised at some of the gems I’ve found on the Manhattanite sale.

One thing I’ve learnt from experience is that, sales are the best time to buy quality simple pieces. You will find that you get even more value out of what you pick up if the pieces compliment what you already have.

1. Siwy Kate High-Waisted Jeans in Jet

High waisted jeans can be tricky as we all know but a black pair like these from Siwy is much more forgiving than the usual coloured versions.

2. Lauren Moshi Dream Catcher Hoodie in Carbon

A soft modal-mix hoodie is always a good staple to keep and an interesting contrast piece to a simple LBD.

3. CC Skye Lucy Bag in Black

I love this classic patent leather bowler bag which goes with anything! Its also carried by celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Katherine Heigl and Jessica Biel!

4. Vita Milano Bracelet in Peach

Chain accessories combined with leather will never go out of date thanks to Coco Chanel. Instead of the usual black & white leather paired with gold chains, you get this refreshing peach version which stands out especially when worn with dark colours.

So, what’s your favourite sale pick from Manhattanite so far? Share it with me!

Shopping in Heels After Work — The Biggest No-No!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Authored by: Good Girl Gone Shopping

I.love.to.shop.

I do so whether I’m feeling cheery or when I’m feeling blue. I do so whether I am bloated and puffy or when I have lost five pounds. And unfortunately, I do so while wearing heels after an eight-hour work shift. Of course, most of us know how to spend long days wearing stilettos, peep toes, or wedges to work. But hitting a retail store or boutique when the dogs are barking – after work — is a no-no. This will definitely ruin your lovely time browsing, trying on, and purchasing, especially  if you are as thorough and eager as “Rebecca Bloomwood!”

The last time I wore my pink pointy heels to the mall on a Friday after work, I wanted to cry. Because I enjoy walking the mall also for exercise, I found myself instead taking little shuffle steps and ending my shopping trip about an hour early. So trivia: How could I have prevented this from occurring? Well, number one would be to stop repeating my mistake and assuming that I can tough it out. Number two: I should have remembered to bring a cute pair of flats with me to change in.

If you relate to this, and you don’t have at least one pair of cute sandals or ballet flats that go great with any outfit, take a look at these adorable (and on-sale affordable) metallic flats from Manhattanite. Talk about versatility!

Introducing Good Girl Gone Shopping

Elana PruittSo here’s the deal, I know that boots are typically not really a summertime shoe. But when it comes to my BCBGirls’ booties, I just can’t turn my back on them… not just yet. That said, my solution to making them work for me in the summer is to pair them up with brightly colored, summer dresses (of course, I will continue to wear them with skinny jeans…).

As for the selection of flirty, affordable dresses that Manhattanite has available? Well, well, I am a bit head over heels for them. Discounts and clearance on fabulous designer wear makes me swoon – honestly. Those who don’t know me just yet, allow me to say that as the Good Girl Gone Shopping, you will soon learn how obsessive I am about shopping sales and budgeting thy finances. In addition to being a fashion blogger, I am also a personal shopper (GGGS was formerly ‘Diary of a Personal Shopper’) who lives to find the perfect pieces to complement a gal’s personality and lifestyle. My name is Elana Pruitt – nice to meet ya!

So, here are my top five picks from the Manhattanite closet. I have personally selected dresses that each retail for about 150 bucks or less. Whether you pair them up with your own booties, peep-toe heels, flat gladiator sandals, or even stilettos, you can make each one a new story to tell. Check them out:
