Red Carpet Ready

Friday, July 31st, 2009
Authored by: The Daily Obsession

There comes a time in all women’s lives when they have to walk a red carpet.   Whether that’s a literal step-and-repeat or if you’re attending a party thrown in your honor, you know that you’ll have to look your fabulous best because all the attention will be on you!  I religiously study the red carpet looks of the celebs and socialites of the fashion industry, and always find that it’s the perfect mix of glamour and confiendence (read: comfort) that takes red carpet dressing a step above.

Below are my top three favorite picks from Manhattanite for the next time you’re in front of the camera.

Lauren Conrad Ashlee Dress in Black

lc1

The asymmetrical one shoulder look is still very in on red carpets from Hollywood to the Hamptons.  But the sweet heart neckline and structured shape up the glamour factor of this LBD beyond average evening wear.

Voom Elle Tube Dress in White

lc2

Little white dresses are some of celebrities’ favorite pieces to light up the red carpet and the large bow detailing at the hip makes this the hottest LWD of the season. Check out these white dresses (below) from Spring 2009 Fashion Week.  Notice a trend?

Yoana Baraschi Boho Deluxe Dress in Leopard

And here is something really attention grabbing. The draped fit is super feminine but the animal print is super confident. The unexpected combination means that all eyes will definately be on you all evening.  Not to mention, leopard looks great against the red carpet.

Effortless and Stylish BBQ Attire

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

For me there are two types of BBQs; the lets dress up all cute and look at the food on the grill and the lets get down and dirty with a hotdog and some potato salad. I prefer the down and dirty, which means down and dirty apparel.

If you are anything like me – the “down and dirty” look is a carefully crafted masterpiece. You’ve gotta look carefree and fabulous at the same time. I have managed to concoct the perfect formula for such a look.

Key Ingredients:

– 1 loose fitting and fashion forward top. This is perfect for actually eating at a BBQ!

– 1 pair of cut off denim shorts. Denim shorts are so hot right now, so going with this “lazy days of summer” look will actually score you tons of fashion points.

– 1 pair of Havaianas flip flops. I strongly advise against going with some “other” brand of flip flops because Havaianas are the best.

Optional Ingredients:

– A pair of Wayfarer sunglasses.

– Oversized tote (you need something to bring your BBQ contribution.)

– Stylish hair band to keep your hair out of your face in the hot-hot heat.

Carefully mix all ingredients with fashionable care and head off to your BBQ! Have fun and eat a hotdog for me.

Hi everyone, it’s Jeanette. Along with the Manhattanite bloggers, I’ll be dropping in with a “love-it list” post occassionally to highlight my favorite items from the shop.
It seems like so many women get pregnant in the summer. I can count at least 10 friends and family members that are expecting right now. Aahhh, the joys of shopping for the mom-to-be and new baby! Here are a few of my favorite gifts to give friends when i find out the exciting news,  for baby showers or to bring to the hospital visit.

Organizing the Busy Exec

"The Executive"I tend to get overwhelmed with tasks often – all the time really. But I think I do it to myself. Not only do I strive to do everything under the sun all at once, I try to do it without any organization. As I type, I have post-its surrounding me, a full trash can under the desk, and magazines piled on top of my printer. Yikes! So any sort of resources that can keep me on track of what is priority is magic.

And I have found a section on Manhattanite that makes me smile and go “phew!” In addition to selling clothes, shoes, and accessories, this site also features must-haves that support individual lifestyles. If you can relate to me and my office chaos, “The Executive” is for you! Check out how cute this illustration is! There are solutions for everyone. “The Socialite” and “The Jetsetter” are also faves of mine.

Wardrobe Staple: Ripped Leggings

Afraid to ruin or over-do the ripped legging look by d-i-y? Your worries (and mine, for that matter) are over because David Lerner’s subtle version of the ripped leggings will solve all your ripped or slashed related fashion dilemmas! These leggings have already got the seal of approval from hollywood celebrities such as Megan Fox, Halle Berry and Nicky Hilton.

Sturdy enough to wear as pants and not overly ripped to make you look like some homeless person, these leggings would easily fit into anyone’s wardrobe. Be sure to pair them with your favourite tunic tops and especially denim shorts for Fall.  I like it worn with the gorgeous Skia Gia Tube top especially since it provides a refreshing feminine take on the tough look of these leggings.

Fluxus’ burnout tunic would be a good choice for a more grungy 90’s look which is the trendy look to do at the moment. Complete with an old coat and some cool black leather boots, they would make a great fall/winter outfit as well.

Last but not least, my favorite piece to wear with these leggings are Siwy’s Camilla cut-off shorts in Riot which features a gold splatter paint effect all over. The metallic accent on these shorts is a marriage made in heaven with the rips on these tights.

Since these ripped leggings aren’t as drastically done as most d-i-y end products would look, they actually are just as versatile as your regular black leggings. This is definitely one of the best investments of the current and next few seasons!

Mella Flip Flops

After a long day roughing it in heels, there’s nothing I like more than coming home to super comfy, super soft slippers.  During the winter, you can’t get me out of my White & Warren cashmere slippers, but during the summer you’ll find me in my Mella Terry Flip Flops.  I became obsessed with these since the first time I’ve ever tried them on, years ago.  Unlike rubber flip flops, the straps will never cut into your feet and the terry cloth provides extra soft cushioning for feet.  Although I choose just to wear these at home, the rubber sole makes this shoe even appropriate to wear outside- though I would steer clear of the beach.  The flip flops also come in a platform version, with 2 and 1/4in wedge to give you a little boost.  Super cute with jeans or a mini skirt.

Going a bit Gaga….

It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me that I have a huge amorous crush on Lady Gaga.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a woman who does fashion by her own rules, and I’d love to see more, More, MORE Gaga-esque boldness and playfulness hitting the streets around us.  Including on you.  And me.

jetset

Siwy Hannah Slim Crop Jean in Wet Jet: I love that these mimic Gaga’s infamous latex body suits, but may be a tad more comfortable for everyday wear.

mesh

Siwy Sophie Slim Crop Pant in Jet and Onyx Mesh or also in Wanderlust/Onyx: the peak-a-boo styling on these would be great coupled with an oversized blazer and big glasses.

(Anyone else suspect Michelle Siwy is a Lady Gaga fan?)

Most importantly, is that with finding someone like Lady Gaga an inspiration, is to remember that the most sincere form of flattery is not replicating, but doing your own bright & bold thing (though that wouldn’t stop me from wearing these in her honor)!

Vita Summer Bangles

For the most part, I love the idea of bangles.  Classic.  Versatile. Chic.

But when it comes to wearing those little gold circles, I run into many issues such as the sound they make clanking up against each other, how they  make a mess in my jewerly box, and generally- I don’t enjoy having a thousand things on my arm.

But then I discovered these Classic Original Bangles from Vita which I LOVE.  The leather band means no jingling as I’m typing.  The distinctive look means I only need one or two to create a nice statement. And the white/silver/gold color palette makes this the perfect accessory for summer.  Plus, each band is made with leather and plated in 24karat gold and retails for $66.  It’s like an investment without having to pay the prices!

The Cover Up that Can Go From Water to Land

Sunny summer days are upon us and we are always on the search for the perfect swimsuit, the most comfortable sandals, the hollywood sunglasses and the every occasion dress. Its easy to fall in love with what looks good, that sometimes we forget to look for what we actually need. This is where I come in to help. This past weekend as I was enjoying the summer day in a boat with friends, it seemed as if nothing could go wrong. I had the swimsuit,  the sandals and I thought I had the perfect dress.

It wasn’t until we were docking and discussing our plans for what to do next that I realized I didn’t really think my outfit choice through. We had made plans to go to dinner…we were starving, the kind of starving that had me eating candy by the handful, which I never do.

It wasn’t until I reached for my cover up I realized that it just wouldn’t do. I had packed it because it worked great as a day dress. It did its job, it matched my bathing suit and it was easy to just throw back on.

Did it work to go out to dinner? No way.

The little dress was the latest trend, practically see through, and had a boxy shape to it and not until I was hit with the dilemna, of do I actually have to go to a restaurant dressed like this? Did I realize that rules from land wear to water wear really shouldnt differ.

I didn’t know that I was throwing away years of experience in figuring out what looked best on me simply because I was on water. If you know what look compliments you the best, dont fall into the latest trend.

In my quest to remedy my mistake I found the Vix Solid Cotton Short Dress cover up on the Manhattanite site. It’s more stylish than the average cover up, so no need to pack an extra set of clothes. Just add heel, red lipstick and this could easily go from water to land.. not just any land, but dinner.

Shopping in Heels After Work — The Biggest No-No!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Authored by: Good Girl Gone Shopping

I.love.to.shop.

I do so whether I’m feeling cheery or when I’m feeling blue. I do so whether I am bloated and puffy or when I have lost five pounds. And unfortunately, I do so while wearing heels after an eight-hour work shift. Of course, most of us know how to spend long days wearing stilettos, peep toes, or wedges to work. But hitting a retail store or boutique when the dogs are barking – after work — is a no-no. This will definitely ruin your lovely time browsing, trying on, and purchasing, especially  if you are as thorough and eager as “Rebecca Bloomwood!”

The last time I wore my pink pointy heels to the mall on a Friday after work, I wanted to cry. Because I enjoy walking the mall also for exercise, I found myself instead taking little shuffle steps and ending my shopping trip about an hour early. So trivia: How could I have prevented this from occurring? Well, number one would be to stop repeating my mistake and assuming that I can tough it out. Number two: I should have remembered to bring a cute pair of flats with me to change in.

If you relate to this, and you don’t have at least one pair of cute sandals or ballet flats that go great with any outfit, take a look at these adorable (and on-sale affordable) metallic flats from Manhattanite. Talk about versatility!
