How to Wear the New Denim Short

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Authored by: The Daily Obsession

I’ll admit the last time I wore denim shorts, I was 12 and I currently don’t even own a pair.  But denim shorts (and shorts in general) went from tween to decidely grown up when paired correctly. Instead of just throwing on any old top, try one of the biggest trends of the summer (again) – the nautical striped tee with a white or khaki boyfriend blazer over it for instant chic. For day, pair with flat T-sandals and sex it up with heels for going out.  I would keep the accessories light as not to clash with the  stripes.  To keep it classy, I opt for cuffed shorts as opposed to cut-offs in a style that is slightly looser, longer and in a darker wash. Siwy Ruby Roll Up Shorts in Twilight is my top pick.

Introducing Good Girl Gone Shopping

Elana PruittSo here’s the deal, I know that boots are typically not really a summertime shoe. But when it comes to my BCBGirls’ booties, I just can’t turn my back on them… not just yet. That said, my solution to making them work for me in the summer is to pair them up with brightly colored, summer dresses (of course, I will continue to wear them with skinny jeans…).

As for the selection of flirty, affordable dresses that Manhattanite has available? Well, well, I am a bit head over heels for them. Discounts and clearance on fabulous designer wear makes me swoon – honestly. Those who don’t know me just yet, allow me to say that as the Good Girl Gone Shopping, you will soon learn how obsessive I am about shopping sales and budgeting thy finances. In addition to being a fashion blogger, I am also a personal shopper (GGGS was formerly ‘Diary of a Personal Shopper’) who lives to find the perfect pieces to complement a gal’s personality and lifestyle. My name is Elana Pruitt – nice to meet ya!

So, here are my top five picks from the Manhattanite closet. I have personally selected dresses that each retail for about 150 bucks or less. Whether you pair them up with your own booties, peep-toe heels, flat gladiator sandals, or even stilettos, you can make each one a new story to tell. Check them out:

An Introduction to Cordelia of Rebel Chic

Authored by: rebel_chic

What would you do if you felt like you didn’t fit in with the crowd, a certain sub-culture or even with the current fashion trends? I see many people I know conforming to the norm blindly, but luckily for me, I’ve always been a rebel which gives me some kind of immunity from caring about what most people think.

Through my personal style, I have found the skin that I am happy to be in and everyday I feel as though I am discovering more about myself through what I like in fashion.

A metallic silver jacket, black leather flat boots and a grey dress are what I consider my style essentials. I am always on the lookout for these three things no matter what the fashion trends are and I feel very strongly that these items are a huge part of me.

When I first started blogging, I was living in cold and wet Britain, but these days I live back home in Singapore where it is hot and humid (but still wet!) instead. Therefore, the things I see myself picking up when I am shopping in stores seem to put me in the direction of a more laid-back version of my covered-up style back in the UK.

Speaking of laid-back style, I am favouring some carelessly cool pieces on Manhattanite which will easily fit in with my style essentials. The way I see it is that I will make things, in this case fashion fit in with me and not the other way round!

My Manhattanite Picks:

1. David Lerner Organic Cap Sleeve Pocket Tee

I can never have enough grey shirts that hide what I don’t want others to see and show off what I want others to notice. I love the super short sleeves on this one.

2. Siwy Camilla Cut-Off Shorts in Charm

I had my eye on these for awhile now. I just love the light, barely there baby blue wash. It is just asking for the rebel in me to team it with something tough and dark.

3. Lauren Moshi Sword Heart Grommet Hoodie in Black

Grommets are on my mind a lot at the moment. This is definitely the most sensual hoodie ever with your décolletage on show. I think my little grey dress agrees with it too!

4. CC Skye Woven Leather & Chain Bangle

I like my jewelry to enhance the clothes I already have and this is just one of those versatile pieces that go with everything.

Want more of me? I can be found on my personal blog, Rebelle Chic.

Introducing ALIXROSE

Authored by: alixrose

I am assuming you are a lover of great clothes and take pride in your style, especially since you find yourself on Manhattanite’s fashion blog. Therefore, you are a person after my own heart. Before I get ahead of myself, let me give you a little insight into who I am.

I am a petite chatter box, that writes by day and by night. Yes, a girl’s work is never done, but there’s no harm when its something you love. I pour my heart into my personal fashion blog Alixrose everyday.

It’s where I do my best to infuse fashion trends from editorial spreads, designer collections, and fashion photography, into my readers’ daily wardrobe. There is also a special interview feature where readers are given a little a little glimpse into the world of designers and bloggers. I do my best to keep it fun and light – if you know my blog, it’s pretty evident that I usually write the way I talk. I try not to take anything too seriously, I mean how can you when you’re constantly looking at pretty things??

That brings me to why I am delighted to be blogging for Manhattanite. The style of clothes really fit my lifestyle and I am certain inspiration won’t be hard to find. In fact, just looking through a few pages of the Manhattanite shop has me reeling with ideas. Also, the blogger crew is made up of  some of my favorite bloggers and I am ecstatic to be a part of this with them.

I look forward to putting some ideas to paper and sharing them with you. If you have any questions or comments, you can always find me here. :)

Crush of the Moment: Siwy Jeans

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

I haven’t had a denim crush in a really long time. In fact, I have been able to keep myself away from my premium denim habit for, like, a really long time. The last pair of way too expensive jeans I bought was a pair of True Religions, last summer and come to think of it, those were a gift. Anyways, back to the subject at hand … Siwy jeans.

siwy1Siwy jeans have a sort of heat radiating off of them. They are like the Meghan Fox of jeans. They are vaguely familiar, ridiculously hot, kinda unattainable (not really, just buy them on Manhattanite), and they make you feel really good.

There is a nice selection out there but I have my eye on the Siwy Camilla Shorts in Libertine w/ Rainbow Jewels. What can I say; I am sucker for short-shorts and jewels. I also have my eye steady on the Siwy Sophie Slim Crop Pant in Jet and Onyx Mesh. Why? I don’t know, maybe because I don’t have enough garments with mesh in them.

Find your favorite on Manhattanite now and tell me why you love them … I just like to know these things.

Stumbling on Style: Tolani Scarves

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Authored by: Ashe Mischief

I recently won a Tolani scarf on a blog giveaway.  Now, to be honest, this meant absolutely nothing to me, as I tend not to follow trends so much, and I just expected a colorful, decent quality scarf from the giveaway.

I was in for a shock when I received the scarf.  It was luscious and soft to the touch, and the colors were vibrant and beautiful.  Much more so than I expected, and it fits in with my wardrobe beautifully.

Then I went to work.  One of my hip, scarf-loving girl friends was like, “I love your scarf!  OMG, is it a Tolani?” to which I replied, “Um… that sounds like the name that was on the label.”  I proceeded to unwrap my scarf to confirm.  She then told me that I was, in fact, wearing the hip scarf of Hollywood’s elite around my neck (and the “reasonable” price of them). Let’s not forget she did tell me she’d be plotting how to steal it from me.  In many ways, I was confounded that I was wearing a $99 scarf on my neck; the most I’d ever paid for one before was $15.

Despite that, I love my scarf.  It’s posh and luxurious, but doesn’t feel so delicate that I’m scared to wear it.  I’m more excited about the collection of that Manhattanite has, and I look forward to seeing more of these beautiful pieces in stock.

Gift This: Movies To See Notepad

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Authored by: Lauren Messiah

Lately when the topic of movies comes up, the conversation always takes the same turn; “You haven’t seen that?” or “Where have you been!” or “You’re joking, right?”

Basically if it’s a classic, really well known, or worthy of an award — I haven’t seen it. Need an example? Okay, this one seems to sum up my point pretty well … Star Wars. Yep that’s right, I haven’t seen Star Wars. You see, Ben Stiller movies are more my speed.

Movies To See Notepad

Movies To See Notepad

I have disgusted my co-workers with my movie antics for the last time. This disgust has resulted in them rattling off a list of movies that I need to see. I have this list written down on some random Hello Kitty post-it note that is currently buried somewhere in my Gucci handbag. The list will probably never surface again.

That smashed up sheet of paper seems pretty foolish considering this awesome notepad exists. Not only would this notepad be handy for a movie flunky like myself but it would also make a nice addition to a movie gift pack. Think about it — Popcorn, a few DVDs, and this sweet notebook tucked inside a chic little tote. Sounds like something that I would like to receive as a gift (hint, hint.)

Introducing Jordana of Clutch22

Friday, June 19th, 2009
Authored by: Clutch22

Hey shopping mavens! My name is Jordana and I have an indie style blog called Clutch 22. As a blogger who has been obsessed with Manhattanite since I bought my first pair of Siwy jeans over a year ago (the Hannah’s in Kiss shown in the pic below; original post here)…it’s no surprise that I’m thrilled to be a part of the virtual “Manhattanites.”

To kick things off for my first official post, I want to share some of my favorite party dresses for summer. My birthday is July 3rd, so finding the perfect look has definitely been on my mind. What I love about Manhattanite is the bi-coastal variety – I love the sharp edgy styles from the streets of New York, but there are times where I want to rock a boho beach chic look as seen more in cities like LA and San Diego.  I have no idea what I’ll end up doing to celebrate, but as long as it’s sunny (let’s hope Seattle is good to me this year), all of the below are sure to do the trick.

An Introduction to Crosby of PR Couture

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
Authored by: Crosby

Hello lovelies! My name is Crosby and I am the founder of PR Couture, a little ditty of a blog that focuses on the fashion PR niche. As a more trade blog, I am thrilled to be fashion blogging for Manhattanite and diving into the clothes (and not just the PR behind the clothes!).

I am a collector – postcards, fortunes, fabric, photographs, unicorns, black flats – and I love putting these images around my house, stuffed into books to be found later, incorporated into gifts or art. I tend to be drawn toward the the pretty, romantic, sometimes cynical and a bit dark. It’s no surprise then, with the early summer upon us, and June Gloom descended upon San Diego, that I sought out the Sofia Coppola film Virgin Suicides for fashion inspiration.

I know we are all being fed 90’s grunge-land, but for summer I love the idea of 1970’s style white dresses, hints of pink and a flower or two. After taking a look at a few delicious shots of Ms. Dunst, I couldn’t resist the Va Va by Joy Han Daisy Dress in White. Perhaps the clothes themselves are so pure to create contrast and intrigue when we figure out just how complex the girl is who wears them?

An Introduction to Jennine

Monday, June 15th, 2009
Authored by: Jennine

Hi there, I’m Jennine and I’m a reformed shopaholic. Sort of. Prior to my blog The Coveted two years ago, I had a massive shopping addiction, like we’re talking every lunch break I’d be at the shops…

Now a days I’ve managed to curb my shopping, instead I daydream about fashion and think of ways to work with the most essential parts of a wardrobe, getting the most out of each piece. Often times I’ll mix in vintage and DIY (do it yourself)  in with contemporary pieces to really create that unique look.

Essential for this summer…

Statement Tanks

Who says tank tops need to be simple? The summer of 2009 is all about relaxed rocker chic. You’ll see deconstructed tee shirts, jeans, cotton jersey everywhere. Personally, I’m loving statement tanks. Here on Manhattanite, designer Astars, a division of motorsport company, Alpinestars. They create high quality tee shirts and tanks with a motorcycle vibe. Perfect for wearing with messy, wind tossed hair, jeans and super strappy sandals.

Astars Elisa Drape Tunic in Black $82.00

Astars Pit Slouchy Tank in Algiers Blue $62.00
